At times of stress, we all need a little light relief, and what better to provide it than a pair of  naughty goats.  Goats are well known for their climbing ability, and are often seen in argan trees in some areas of Morocco.  It is quite unusual to see them climbing roofs in Wales though.

Mable and the well-named Trouble, escaped from their garden in Blaencwm, Rhondda, and climbed twenty feet onto a neighbour’s roof. Fay Wilson-Yeates, filmed her efforts to get them down to show her husband, and the video is now being shared by everyone else too.  She is reported to have said, “I think it’s just what the world needs right now – my goats can bring a smile to people’s faces.”

In the Sindh deserts of Pakistan, the water situation is desperate:  some women walk for four hours to collect water for their family.  Fariel Salahuddin has an answer to the problem though, GOATS!  There are a lot of goats in the desert, every family has a goat or three, but money is scarce.  So, villagers club together, each providing a goat or whatever they can spare and Fariel and her friends sell them for during Eid when the price is high.  The money is used to pay for solar water pumps to provide water for drinking, bathing and cooking.  Perhaps the biggest impact though, is on society:  families are happier and the villagers are socialising more.

With the US election the subject of every other media article, the silly season is definitely here.  A recent email to Republican supporters sent by Eric Trump included the state division map which apparently showed an overwhelming majority for his father, Donald Trump.  The map was calculated from numbers published on FiveThirtyEight.com, a statistics-driven news website.  Unfortunately, the map he used showed who would win the US election if only men could vote (the report also included a similar map depicting the situation if only women voted). Inevitably, these were followed swiftly by other maps prepared by the Twitterati, including one calculating showing what would happen if goats voted…
